Appointments & Getting Started
No. You may schedule a consultation directly with Open Helix Health.
If you were referred by a healthcare provider or have relevant medical records or prior genetic testing, we encourage you to share them before your appointment.
Open Helix Health currently offers personalized consultations related to:
Personal and family health history concerns
Helping individuals better understand whether health conditions in themselves or their family may have an inherited cause.
Cancer risk and genetic testing
Support for individuals concerned about inherited cancer risk or wondering whether testing may be helpful.
Heart health and family history concerns
Guidance related to inherited heart disease, high cholesterol, sudden cardiac death, and other family heart health concerns.
Review of existing genetic test results
Expert explanation of previously completed genetic testing to help you better understand what results may mean and possible next steps.
Your consultation is designed to help you better understand your personal and family health history and whether genetic testing may be helpful.
Depending on your concerns, your visit may include:
- Review of personal medical history
- Discussion of family health history
- Review of prior genetic testing results (if available)
- Discussion of whether genetic testing may be appropriate
- Explanation of testing options and limitations
- Review of possible results and what they could mean
- Personalized next-step recommendations
Testing is always your choice.
If testing is appropriate and you decide to move forward, we will review the process, sample collection, and when to expect results.
You may benefit from a consultation if:
- Cancer runs in your family
- Heart disease or high cholesterol runs in your family
- A family member experienced sudden cardiac death
- Health conditions appear at younger ages than expected
- You have questions about inherited health risks
- You are wondering whether genetic testing may be helpful
- You already had genetic testing and still have questions
Not sure whether your situation applies? That is okay. We can review your history together and discuss whether testing may be appropriate.
Genetic Testing Questions
Not necessarily.
Testing is never required and may not be appropriate for everyone. Your consultation is designed to help you better understand whether testing may be helpful based on your personal and family history.
The decision to pursue testing is always yours.
Results are typically available 3–4 weeks after the laboratory receives your sample, although timing may vary depending on the test ordered.
Open Helix Health may help coordinate genetic testing when appropriate following consultation.
Testing is completed through a clinical laboratory partner and billed separately from consultation fees.
Yes.
Many patients receive genetic testing results without a clear explanation of what they mean or what to do next.
Open Helix Health offers a personalized review of existing genetic testing results to help clarify findings, discuss implications for health and family members, and answer remaining questions.
That is okay. Many patients have limited or incomplete family history information. We will work with whatever information is available and discuss whether genetic testing may still be helpful.
Payment & Insurance
Open Helix Health is currently a self-pay practice and does not bill insurance for consultation services.
Upon request, an itemized receipt may be provided for possible reimbursement through your insurance carrier or HSA/FSA plan.
Coverage and reimbursement are not guaranteed and depend on your individual plan.
Many patients are able to use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for consultations related to medical, diagnostic, or preventive care.
This may include appointments related to family history concerns, inherited health risks, or genetic testing guidance.
Because eligibility varies by plan, we recommend confirming coverage directly with your HSA/FSA administrator.
Genetic testing costs vary depending on the laboratory, test ordered, and insurance coverage.
Many patients qualify for insurance coverage, while self-pay laboratory pricing and financial assistance programs may also be available.
Testing costs are billed separately through the laboratory and are not included in consultation fees.
Whenever possible, expected costs are reviewed before testing is ordered.
